COMMUNITY CLASSES and WORKSHOPS
connecting the ANDs community classes strive to make art accessible to people in all communities across Asheville. We believe that through the power of creativity and community collaboration we can enhance public access to art and design education in Asheville’s under-served communities, as well as build inclusivity throughout our community.
To succeed in our vision of creating a stronger community through art, Roots + Wings School of Art and Design is currently sponsoring art and design education programming to Asheville’s more vulnerable communities. These community classes bring weekly or monthly art and design programming to various Asheville after-school partners and nonprofits, including Eliada Home's 21st Century Community Learning Center, Children First/Communities in Schools, and Arts for Life.
In the summer of 2018 we are also hosting a connecting the ANDs creativity camp, during which students from our various nonprofit partner programs will be able to make art together, connect with each other, and develop lasting relationships with one another.
Through these classes and camps, students gain access to a variety of new art mediums and processes, as well as a nurturing and safe space to express themselves, the opportunity to explore and trust their unique creative instincts, and the freedom to make their own choices.
TALK WITH OUR HANDS
During the summer of 2018 we held a 4-part series of open discussion forums and community collaborative art making sessions at various locations in Asheville. Each session featured a guest speaker and topics include Racial Equity, LGBTQ Equality, Interfaith Connections, and Immigration Reform. Participants were invited to share, listen and create in a judgement-free zone. The resulting artworks serves as a reminder of how creative activity bridges gaps in experience, knowledge and understanding.
The series of pieces created from these collaborative making sessions will be made into a postcard set, and sold through Roots + Wings to help fund our Grace Eaton Scholarship Fund.
