Preschool Extended Day Options

We are excited to offer extended programming options before and after-school for our preschoolers at Roots + Wings!

We have four unique providers with yoga, music, story time and movement programming Monday - Friday right here at our R+W Creative Campus.  Students register with each provider separately.

Payments must be made directly to these outside providers, not to Roots + Wings.
Please see links below for each person's contact information.  If you need more care beyond 2:00pm, your child can join our Elementary After-school Community Design Lab program that is here at our Roots + Wings Creative Campus until 5:30pm!

Early Afternoon Programming: 12:30-2:00pm

Mondays

Asheville Kids Yoga with Ms. Emma
12:30-2:00pm
Join Ms. Emma as she guides students in a playful yoga practice, helping them increase mind and body awareness, strength, flexibility, focus and creativity. We will find ways to wiggle, relax and create together after our busy school day. Emma has been teaching preschool for over seven years and she believes that children do best when they have the freedom to learn through play. These extra afternoon hours will be a place where children can be creative, navigate emotions, build confidence and develop necessary skills to interact within the world.  Emma is also a lead teacher at our R+W Visual Arts Preschool.

Music: Magnificent Melodies with Ms. Lilly
1:00-2:00pm (Ms. Emma will be available to watch students dismissed before 1:00pm)
Lilly-Anne Merat graduated with a degree in music for Skidmore College in 2011, and has been a performer and music educator ever since! Ms. Lilly loves sharing her passion for music with others. She is constantly amazed by the profound impact music has on children of any age, but especially in their earlier, formative years. In particular, a child’s innate connection to singing, rhythm and movement has shown boundless influence on their cognitive development. Even more importantly, making music brings an incredible amount of joy to their lives! On Mondays we will focus on the melodic component of the musical world. We will sing songs from different cultures, play along with instruments, practice melodic patterns and feel the connection between music and our bodies. We will also explore the relationship between music and the visual arts. Your child will gain invaluable skills of creative expression and will love exploring the world of music!  Lilly is also an assistant teacher at our R+W After-school Community Design Lab.

Book Nest: Storytime with Ms. Jess
1:00-2:00pm (Ms. Emma will be available to watch students dismissed before 1:00pm)
In this class we’ll engage in the five practices of early literacy: singing, talking, playing, reading, and writing, and have fun and make art while we’re at it! As simple as storytime seems, these experiences are the building blocks of literacy. And by making reading and learning fun and playful, kids are hooked for a lifetime! Ms Jess brings her experience and training as a children’s librarian, an artist, and an instructor at Roots + Wings together to share her love of picture books, stories, art, and of course fun with children. As an extension of her own relaxation-centered art practice, Ms. Jess hopes that Book Nest will offer children an opportunity to discover the rewards of getting cozy with books, friends, rhymes, and songs. Jessica is also an assistant teacher at our R+W Visual Arts Preschool.

NEW 2019-20 Afternoon K-BOOST class

While classrooms have changed in recent years, we're feeling excited about keeping things fun and engaging while we sharpen and learn some of the key concepts to help rising Kindergartners get ahead and feel confident. We'll spend a few afternoons a week strengthening our letter and number sense, explore math concepts with hands-on materials and learn our way around a story book and all that it has to offer us. Through consistent fine-motor activities and learning a pencil grip, we hope to ignite a love of story-telling and letter writing that will aid in our creative expression! Working together in a classroom community we'll  grow in our social-emotional skills, teach ourselves a few mindfulness tricks, explore friendship and find our voices!

Brannan Robson brings a wholistic and experiential approach to learning, both for herself and for her students. Brannan graduated with her Masters in Early Childhood: General & Special Education from Bank Street College in New York, where their approach to education is to make learning an experience, and individualize learning to meet the needs of each child. She has been teaching for almost a decade and cherishing the presence of young children since she was old enough to babysit her neighbors. Brannan believes that new concepts are meaningful only once they have an experience or memory woven into them. She works together with her students to integrate these new ideas through movement, art, literacy play, hands-on activities and stories, thus giving them life and purpose in the minds of children. Brannan is also a trained kids yoga teacher (as well as grown-up yoga teacher), and takes delight in sharing mindfulness practices with her students.
