What: A summer program that connects kids 14-18 years of age (rising 9-12th graders) who are serious about their art and design talent with local artists in their studios.  This program is aimed at students who want to explore and develop their skills and knowledge of their medium. It will offer a safe, engaging option for teens to push their talents to the next level.

When: Summer: Mid-June through mid August.  Artists will work with students for 15 hours over their choice of either 1 week (M-F) or once or twice per week for a few weeks.

Who: Local high school students, rising grades 9-12, and talented local artists.  Students must apply to work with a specific artist.  We will choose two students to be mentored by each artist, or group of artists.  Scroll down to check out our list of artists for this summer!

Where: Mentorships will take place at the artist’s studios or, if necessary, at the Roots + Wings Creative Campus. Students will also participate in two meetings together at Roots + Wings.

Cost: Sliding scale up to $300 per student.  We can offer full or partial scholarships, and will accept payments beyond the $300 to support other scholarships.

1 student per session

For the week-long mentorship, we will be concentrating on hand building with clay, developing ideas in your sketchbook and researching information. This mentorship, depending on the goals of the student, may include slab, coil and pinch building as well as using moulds.  We will focus on both functional and sculptural techniques. We will work on basic glaze mixing, low to mid-range electric firing and the raku firing technique. Time permitting; we will visit other clay artists in the area. We will be working both at my rustic home studio and my studio at Pink Dog Creative in the River Arts District. This will be an intensive learning experience and a lot of fun.

My work uses color, imagery and texture to translate and express the stories that are shared among all of us. Working with found images, text, the color of chalk pastel and occasionally encaustic medium, I capture moments that often transcend expression in mere words.

I will be working with one student at a time on a connecting the ANDs self portrait and some other personal pieces.
Students will learn about my process of collage and chalk as we work collaboratively attempting to capture their story visually.  I look forward to sharing my studio for not only the exploration of the creative process, but for the the conversations and connections that will be made.  connecting the ANDs.

Film: Inner Works Productions

Available Dates: 5 Mondays - June 11, 13, 18, 20 and 25

Are you concerned about justice, the environment, community development, policing, homelessness or other current issue?  I am looking for thoughtful teens eager to push boundaries, explore important ideas and develop new skills. All equipment, software and tutoring will be provided during the hands-on development of a short Public Service Announcement-type (PSA) movie advocating for positive change.
Subjects Covered: Planning, Scripting, Producing, Editing and Distributing the final work.  Project subject matter will be up to the mentee(s).

Model Citizens

Project: Up-cycling / Visual Merchandising 3 Day Project, hosted at Hospice Thrift Store and Roots + Wings

Students will gain hands on experience up-cycling garments, designing and creating accessories and merchandising and displaying their work in a store. Students will create a design brief, work within a budget, seek feedback and use social media to promote their process and their work.

Day 1: 5 hours
Site survey: Explore the space, customer base, current offerings, needs of the store
Concept Development: Decide on a theme / look / goal
Materials Purchasing: Using the allotted budget, shop for materials in the Hospice store, plus any additional art supplies from approved suppliers.

Day 2: 5 hours
Garment construction: Either onsite at Hospice Thrift store or at Roots + Wings, construct the show piece garment
Update social media channels appropriately

Day 3: 5 hours
Install: Install the garment on a mannequin or other approved stand. Merchandise accordingly
Record: Photograph work, publish photos online, seek feedback
Break down: As requested by Hospice staff, remove items, return site to original condition
